Captain Atom awakes to find himself in a devastated city. He assumes that he is still in present day Chicago until he is attacked by giant-sized OMACs. He is powerless against them until he metabolises the energy he absorbed and has evade them. Atom is saved by that era’s Batman who takes him to meet the Justice League — including the long-lived Power Girl from his era. Atom tries to talk to her about Max, but she is too preoccupied with events in her own time. A century of war and famine has left Earth’s population at third of what it was in Atom’s time. The surviving Justice League members have gathered for a final assault on Max’s Moon Base – he’s long dead, but a new initiative called “Fire Sky” has incubated and is about to launch. The Captain joins them for their assault.

Power Girl confesses that there was a pivotal moment just after Atom disappeared – an event that precipitated their current war -, but before she can tell him what it is they discover that Fire Sky has already been deployed. It is a new breed of OMAC nanite – just like the original OMAC Project. It overtakes the Red Hood them before they can act. Power Girl can’t be infected, but she’s incapacitated by a massive blast of kryptonite radiation. Atom’s powers have started to return and he is about to be pulled back to his own time. Through the pain Power Girl manages to tell him that, just before the war started, Max murdered Wonder Woman and her people, the Amazons, rose up against humanity. Max manipulated public opinion against them and pulled the plunged the world into war.

Batman asks Captain Atom to use his returning powers to destroy the moon base before the Fire Sky virus spreads. He does so, but he is unable to absorb the energy from its explosion before he’s pulled back into the time stream. The moon shatters and leaving the husk the Captain saw on an earlier trip into this future.
